Cross, located at the entrance of the Trein d'Ustou, in wrought iron (Box E 2387): inscription by decree of 9 September 1965

Origin and history

The cross of Ustou is a cross of road located in the village of Ustou, Ariège, in the Occitanie region. Dating from the 18th century, it is precisely at the entrance of the Trein d'Ustou, on the road to Guzet. This monument, typical of the Calvary Crosses, is made of wrought iron and has symbolic elements related to the Passion of Christ, such as the instruments of crucifixion. It is surmounted by a cock, a symbol common in Christian iconography.

The Cross of Ustou was inscribed as historical monuments by order of 9 September 1965. This official protection underscores its heritage and artistic importance. The wrought iron sizes, which support the instruments of the Passion, illustrate a craftsmanship typical of the time. This type of cross often served as a spiritual landmark and a place of devotion for the inhabitants and travellers.

In the historical context of the 18th century, the road crosses played a central role in the religious life of rural communities. They often marked village entrances or crossroads, serving as gathering points for processions or prayers. In Ariège, a region marked by a strong Catholic tradition, these monuments reflected popular piety and the constant presence of religion in daily life. Their construction of wrought iron, a durable but expensive material, also demonstrates the importance attached to these symbols by local communities.
