Cross called Croix Bourdon, at the crossroads: inscription by decree of 10 April 1974

Origin and history

La Croix Bourdon is a historical monument located in Saumur, in the department of Maine-et-Loire, in the Pays de la Loire region. Dating from the 15th century, this cross is a typical example of religious monuments erected at that time to mark places of assembly or important crossroads. It is precisely at the crossroads of Bouju Street and V.C. 5, according to the data of the Merimée database.

The cross was listed as a Historic Monument by a decree of April 10, 1974, reflecting its heritage value and its importance to the local heritage. Today it belongs to the municipality of Saumur. Crosses of this type often served as landmarks for pilgrims, travellers or inhabitants, while symbolizing the presence of Christian faith in public space.

In the 15th century, Saumur was a dynamic city, marked by economic activity linked to its castle and its strategic position on the Loire. Religious monuments such as the Bourdon Cross played a central role in everyday life, serving as landmarks for gatherings, processions or public announcements. Their presence also reflected the importance of the Church in the social and cultural organization of the time.
