16th century cross: inscription by decree of November 10, 1925
Origin and history
The cross of Seigny is a historical monument located in the village of Seigny, Burgundy-Franche-Comté. Dating from the 16th century, it is located on the Grande Rue, in the heart of the village. This type of cross, common in the French countryside, often served as a spiritual or commemorative landmark for local communities.
Classified as a Historic Monument by decree of 10 November 1925, this cross is one of the protected elements of the heritage of the commune. Its location, noted as "passable" (level 5/10) in the databases, suggests an approximate identification, although its official address is recorded under the Insee 21598 code, in the Côte-d的Or department. Today the cross belongs to the municipality of Seigny.
In the 16th century, Burgundy was a region marked by a rural life organized around parishes and seigneuries. The cross of paths or crossroads, like that of Seigny, played a role both religious and social, punctuating the movements and recalling the presence of the Christian faith in the public space. Their erection could also commemorate a local event or serve as symbolic protection for travellers.
