Cross: registration by order of 21 November 1925
Origin and history
The cross on the Pierre-Fontaines road at Perrogney-les-Fontaines is a 14th century monument. It was listed as a Historic Monument by order of November 21, 1925, attesting to its heritage importance. This type of cross, typical of the Middle Ages, often served as a religious landmark or symbol for travellers and local inhabitants.
The location of this cross, although documented (9 Rue du Haut du Sec, Perrogney-les-Fontaines), is considered to have poor accuracy (note of 5/10). Today it belongs to the commune and is part of the protected heritage of the Haute-Marne. Medieval crosses, like this one, were usually erected at crossroads or on roads to mark a place of prayer or gathering.
The historical context of the 14th century in Champagne-Ardenne (now Great East) was marked by a rural and agricultural society, where religious monuments played a central role in community life. These crosses also served as landmarks for pilgrims or merchants crossing the region. Their preservation makes it possible today to better understand the religious and social practices of the time.
