Origin and history

The cross of Anthian is an emblematic monument located in the municipality of the same name, in Burgundy-Franche-Comté. Dating from the 3rd quarter of the 18th century, it embodies the religious and architectural heritage of this period, marked by a strong presence of Christian symbols in the French countryside. This type of cross, often erected at intersections or along paths, served both as a spiritual landmark and as a territorial marker for rural communities.

Classified as a Historical Monument by order of 8 October 1984, this cross is now owned by the municipality of Anthian. Its location, on the edge of the Vicinal Road No. 2, reflects its historical role in structuring the local space. In modern times, such crosses played a central social and religious role, serving as a gathering place for processions, prayers or commemorations.

Their presence also reflected the influence of the Church in the daily life of the villages, where agriculture and faith were rhythmic in the existence of the inhabitants.
