Origin and history
The cross of Perriers-sur-Andelle is an emblematic monument located in the municipality of the same name, in Normandy. Dated from the 16th century, this cemetery cross embodies the funeral architecture typical of the Renaissance. It is distinguished by its location close to the church, highlighting its role in the religious and community life of the time.
Classified as a historic monument since November 24, 1961, this cross is protected for its base, as evidenced by the decree of inscription. Today it belongs to the municipality of Perriers-sur-Andelle, which ensures its preservation. Its inscription in the Merimée base and its precise location (11 A Rue de l'Eglise) make it an accessible and documented heritage element.
In the 16th century, the cemetery crosses played a central role in Norman villages. They not only marked burial sites but also served as spiritual and social landmarks for the inhabitants. These monuments often reflected the collective piety and funeral practices of the time, while embodying local craftsmanship.
The region of Haute-Normandie, now integrated into Normandy, was marked by a rural and artisanal economy. The churches and their surroundings, such as that of Perriers-sur-Andelle, were essential gathering spaces, where religious life, community exchanges and commemorations were mixed. The cross, as part of the sacred landscape, strengthened this link between the living and the dead.
