Cross situated on a plot forming tertrian, at the corner of the C.D. 57 and of the Place de l'Eglise (not cadastral square): inscription by decree of 28 April 1965
Origin and history
The cross of Saint-Orens-de-Gameville is distinguished from the other crosses of the region by its unique style. Unlike the traditional crosses, it is composed of two flat irons ending in the shape of a spear. Christ, also in wrought iron, is framed by a spear and sponge, symbols of the Passion. The whole is sealed in a rectangular stone placed on a base of two superimposed stones, which gives it an architectural stability and singularity.
Classified as a Historical Monument since 1965, this cross is located at the corner of Departmental Road 57 and the Church Square, on a terrace. Its listing in the inventory of Historic Monuments by decree of 28 April 1965 underlines its heritage importance. The precise location, although noted as "a priori satisfactory" (note 6/10), remains a point of interest for visitors and historians.
The cross, owned by the commune of Saint-Orens-de-Gameville, is a rare testimony of the metallurgical crafts of the late 16th century. Its style, distant from the classic cannons of the regional iron crosses, questions its origin and symbolic significance. The presence of the effigy of Christ, surrounded by attributes of the Passion, reinforces its religious and commemorative character, typical of the monuments of this time.
Available sources, including Monumentum, indicate that this cross is a remarkable example of local heritage. Its stone base and wrought iron structure illustrate the construction techniques and materials used during the Renaissance. Although little is known about its sponsor or its precise history, its inscription in the title of Historic Monuments makes it a key element of the Haute-Garonne heritage.
