Monolithic Cross (Box ZP 1): entry by order of 30 May 1927

Origin and history

La Croix de la Couardière is a monolithic cross located in Ploërmel, Morbihan department, Brittany. It is located in front of the chapel Saint-Roch, at the place called La Couardière. This cross, of flat shape with rounded arms, is directly planted in the ground, without base. It presents a symbolic decoration at the crossroads, representing the five wounds of Christ through holes.

Ranked a historic monument since May 30, 1927, the Cross of the Couardière is a typical example of the medieval Breton crosses. These monuments often served as religious landmarks or markers for local pilgrimages. Their presence reflects the importance of the Christian faith in the daily life of the rural communities of the time.

Today the cross belongs to the town of Ploërmel and is protected as historical monuments. Its exact origin remains unknown, but its style and invoice suggest an ancient dating, probably medieval. It is located near the rue de Jouvence, in an area marked by a rich religious and architectural heritage.
