Origin and history

The cross of Verrières is a cross of paths located in the village of Neydens, in Haute-Savoie, region Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. Dated from 1780, it is made up of two rounded stones in molasse, an abundant local material. It presents a decoration, an inscription, and the date engraved. Its precise location is the village square, opposite the church and the town hall, as shown on the IGN maps.

The cross was listed as historical monuments on 1 December 1950. This type of monument, typical of rural areas, often served as a religious landmark or symbol for travellers and residents. Molasse, a local sedimentary stone, was commonly used in Savoyard construction for its availability and ease of size.

According to available sources, the cross is also known as the Cross of Crossing and was realized under the direction of Bernardus Lachenal, the master of work mentioned in the archives. Its inscription in the historical heritage underscores its cultural and architectural importance for the municipality of Neydens and the region.
