Origin and history
The cross of intersection of Montferrier is a wrought iron work measuring 2.25 meters high, dated from the 17th century. It consists of a square vertical stem supporting an openworked cross in its centre, the ends of which end in the shape of a floral chalice. Fine stems, also of wrought iron, form a bouquet of flowers from the fields at its base. This monument illustrates the local metallurgical craftsmanship and the symbolic importance of the road crosses in the countryside of Ancien Régime.
Originally, this cross was located on a mountain road, where it marked the road to the former convent of Montferrier, established in a floor of the village church. In the 19th century, it was moved in front of the presbytery, its present location. Its classification as Historic Monument by decree of 8 June 1979 bears witness to its heritage value, both artistic and historical. Today it belongs to the commune of Montferrier.
The location of the cross, although documented (approximate address: 196 La Laviere du Haut), remains imprecise according to available sources, with a note of 5/10 for the reliability of the coordinates. This monument also reflects the religious and social organization of the Ariegian villages, where the cross crosses served as spiritual and practical landmarks for pilgrims or local inhabitants.
