Origin and history

The Crozatier Museum was founded in 1820, when Viscount François-Gabriel de Becdelièvre founded a multidisciplinary establishment at Puy-en-Velay, with the aim of "giving the taste of arts and science" to young citizens. From its creation, the collections cover various fields: paintings, archaeology, natural sciences, and objects related to local history. This educational and encyclopedic project reflects the cultural ideals of the time, mixing scientific and artistic heritage.

In 1850, a first building was erected in the Fer-à-cheval garden to house the collections. 1868 marks a turning point with the legacy of the founder of art Charles Crozatier (1795–55), native of Puy, allowing to double the exhibition surface. The museum then takes its current name. Neoclassical architecture, designed by Antoine Martin, symbolizes this period of development, while the collections enrich with religious objects (pilgrimage of the Black Virgin), decorative art, and natural specimens.

After World War II (1950), the museum underwent modernization, but it was between 2007 and 2018 that it underwent a major transformation. A renovation project, carried out by architects Emmanuelle Beaudouin, Laurent Beaudouin and Aurélie Husson, incorporates a new volume in translucent glass, talking with the historic building. This site, supported by the State and the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, preserves the monumental staircase and neo-classical facades, while creating bright spaces open to Henri Vinay Park. The reopening in 2018 reveals a museum where ancient and contemporary coexist, highlighting collections ranging from prehistory to industrial science.

The collections of the Crozatier Museum are distinguished by their encyclopaedic character, with sections dedicated to archaeology (gallo-Roman, Egyptian), fine arts (paintings, sculptures), ethnology (costumes, traditional tools), and sciences (botanical, paleontology). Among the remarkable pieces are a praxinoscope by Émile Reynaud, Renaissance weapons, or casts linked to the siege of Sevastopol. The institution also maintains an old printed fund and objects related to the Marian pilgrimage of Puy, highlighting its local anchor.

The current architecture illustrates a duality between heritage and innovation. The 19th century building, preserved on the park side, contrasts with the contemporary glass extension, whose double skin filteres natural light. Interior traffic offers views of the garden, while zenithal light wells illuminate the exhibition rooms. This dialogue between the epochs responds to the museum's initial desire to be a place of transmission, "a spark for the development of talents", as its founder wrote in 1820.
