Iron Cross known as the Durhan Cross: Order of 17 April 1950

Origin and history

The Iron Cross known as the Durhan Cross is an iconic monument located in Lézat-sur-Lèze, in the Occitanie region. Dating from the second half of the eighteenth century, it is distinguished by its wrought iron structure, mounted on a stone base with pronounced curves. This base is raised by two steps, and the central cross, sober and elegant, is supported by four volutes. Two smaller secondary crosses, attached to screw-shaped twisted hammes, frame the main cross by obliquely lifting. A wrought iron bouquet adorns the middle part of the ensemble, giving this work a remarkable singularity in the region.

Classified as a Historical Monument by decree of 17 April 1950, this cross is now the property of the municipality of Lézat-sur-Lèze. Its artistic style and forge technique make it a unique example in the region, testifying to the know-how of the local artisans of the time. The location of the cross, at 3 Boulevard Pasteur, is approximate, with a geolocalized accuracy that is considered to be satisfactory in priori according to the available data. Although its exact use is not detailed, this type of monument was often linked to religious, commemorative or symbolic functions within rural communities.

The Durhan Cross illustrates the importance of cross-roads or cross-roads in the cultural and religious landscape of Occitanie in the 18th century. These monuments served as visual landmarks, places of devotion or territorial markers, reflecting popular piety and social organization of villages. Their presence in the public space also strengthened community cohesion around shared symbols, while highlighting local craftsmanship, as evidenced by the work of the forged iron of this cross.
