Iron cross of the 16th century: classification by decree of 4 July 1907

Origin and history

The cross of Saint-Arcons-d'Allier is a monumental wrought iron cross, dated from the 16th century. It is distinguished by its rarity in the region, where most of the wrought iron crosses are from the seventeenth century. Located in the centre of the village, it has been classified as historical monuments since 4 July 1907. Its style is sober, without iconography, with ends adorned with bulbs and petals.

The cross is located in the territory of the commune of Saint-Arcons-d'Allier, in the department of Haute-Loire, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. It belongs to the municipality and is protected for its heritage interest. Its classification in 1907 reflects its historical and artistic value, especially because of its material and dating.

In the 16th century, monumental crosses were often used as religious or memorial landmarks in villages. That of Saint-Arcons-d'Allier, in wrought iron, is a rare example of this type of heritage in the Velay. His absence of iconography suggests a vocation more symbolic than narrative, typical of the crosses of this period.
