Origin and history
The stone cross of the old Magny-en-Vexin cemetery is an emblematic 16th century monument. Classified as a Historical Monument by decree of 21 January 1908, it embodies the religious and funerary heritage of this period. Its location, at the heart of the French Vexin, reflects the importance of Christian symbols in public spaces during the Renaissance.
This type of cross, often erected near churches or cemeteries, served as a spiritual and commemorative landmark for local communities. In the 16th century, the Vexin, an agricultural region crossed by commercial roads, saw its inhabitants live under the combined influence of the Church and local lords. Cemetery crosses, like Magny-en-Vexin, also marked the sacred limits of burial spaces.
Today, the cross is owned by the commune and remains a material testimony to the religious and social history of the region. Although its exact location (7 Rue Saint-Sauveur) is documented, the accuracy of its geographic location is considered to be satisfactory in accordance with the assessment criteria. Its early classification, in 1908, highlights its recognized heritage value from the early twentieth century.
