Origin and history
The cross of Saint-Clair is a road cross located in Limerzel, Morbihan, near the chapel Saint-Clair. It is distinguished by its structure in carved slate, representing a Christ, and rests on an octagonal barrel set in a base. This monument, typical of Breton Christian architecture, marks the local landscape and bears witness to the religious devotion of the region.
The cross was listed as historic monuments on March 20, 1934, recognizing its heritage value. Today it belongs to the municipality of Limerzel and is located in the valley of Saint-Clair, a place called evocative of its religious history. Its sober style and its material, Lardoise, reflect local craft techniques and the importance of the cross of paths in Breton culture.
The road crosses, like that of Saint-Clair, often served as spiritual landmarks or assembly points for processions. In Morbihan, these monuments were also linked to local legends and popular devotional practices, especially around patron saints. Their presence reinforces the link between the material heritage and the intangible traditions of Brittany.
