Cross of 18s: inscription by order of 1 February 1929
Origin and history
La Croix du XVIIIe siècle du cemetery de Savigny, located in the Haute-Marne department (52), is a historic monument inscribed by ministerial decree. This type of cross, typical of funeral or public spaces, reflects the importance of religion in the daily life of rural communities of the time. Its location in the cemetery highlights its role as both a memorial and a spiritual one for the inhabitants.
The Champagne-Ardenne region, now integrated into the Grand Est, was then marked by a rural and artisanal economy. The cemetery crosses, often erected in the 17th and 18th centuries, served as visual and symbolic landmarks, recalling the presence of the Church in social life. Their preservation until today bears witness to their heritage value and their anchoring in local history.
Classified as a Historical Monument in 1929, this cross now belongs to the municipality of Savigny. Its inscription in the Mérimée base and its precise location (4 Rue du Festival) allow to study architecture and evolution. Although its GPS location is considered poor (note 5/10), it remains a point of interest in the religious and artistic history of the Haute-Marne.
