Cross on the church square: list of 1846

Origin and history

The cross of Royat, called the cross of the apostles, is a monumental Gothic cross erected in 1486, as attests to the inscription engraved at the base of its barrel. Made of lava stone, a material typical of the Auvergne volcanic region, it embodies the religious art of the late Middle Ages, when the cross of crossroads or cemetery served as both a spiritual landmark and a symbol of ecclesiastical power. Its style, marked by detailed sculptures and octagonal structure, reflects the influence of local workshops, probably linked to the construction sites of the Romanesque and Gothic churches of Puy-de-Dôme.

The cross is part of a historical context where the Auvergne, land of pilgrimages and fairs, sees the flourishing of religious monuments intended to affirm the presence of the Church. At that time, Royat, already known for its thermal springs since ancient times, attracted an affluent and pious population, which could finance such works. The monumental crosses, often placed at the entrances of the villages or near the churches, also played a role in the processions and liturgical ceremonies, strengthening their community dimension.

The history of the cross is marked by the upheavals of the French Revolution, during which it was mutilated and overthrown, as a number of religious symbols perceived as emblems of the Old Regime. Saved by an individual, it was raised in the early 19th century in front of the church of Saint-Léger, where it still stands today. This rescue demonstrates local attachment to a threatened heritage, despite political vicissitudes.

In 1841 the parish priest of Royat added a new pedestal from another monument to stabilize and revalue the cross. This octagonal pedestal, adorned with eight statues interpreted as prophets by Eugène Viollet-le-Duc, adds an additional artistic dimension. The cross was one of the first monuments classified in 1846 on the list of French historical monuments, highlighting its early heritage importance.

The sommital cross, of hexagonal section, presents plant motifs and lily flowers, symbols of the French kingship, as well as two major representations: a Christ crowned thorns and a Virgin with Child. These iconographic elements, typical of medieval devotion, make it a remarkable example of sacred art auvergnat. Today, the cross remains a landmark in Royat's landscape, attracting visitors for its history and artistic value.

Ancient photographs from the late 19th and 20th centuries, as well as recent photographs (2021), document its state of conservation. These visual archives help to monitor the possible restorations and evolution of its urban environment. The cross, always located opposite the church of Saint-Léger, continues to symbolize the link between the medieval past of Royat and its contemporary identity, between thermalism and religious heritage.

His classification as a historical monument and studies by figures such as Viollet-le-Duc or local learned societies (such as the Literary and Artistic Society of Puy-de-Dôme) contributed to his reputation. It also illustrates the challenges of preserving monuments made of lava stone, a material susceptible to erosion. Today, the cross of the apostles remains a valuable testimony of the art and religious history of the Auvergne, accessible to the public and integrated into the tourist routes of Royat.
