Origin and history

The church Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption de Cudot, located in the Yonne department in Burgundy-Franche-Comté, is a Catholic building dedicated to the Assumption. Built mainly in the 12th and 15th centuries, it depends on the Archdiocese of Sens-Auxerre. Its architecture and history are marked by medieval elements, including a 13th century tympanum representing the Dormition of the Virgin, framed by two angels.

The church is an annual pilgrimage site, celebrated on Pentecost Monday, in honour of Saint Alpais, a medieval berger that became ascetic in Cudot after being accused of leprosy. A statue erected in 1874, the year of the recognition of his veneration by Pope Pius IX, dominates the facade. Inside, a 13th-century tomb-reliquary houses its seat, while a golden bronze shawl, made at the end of the 19th century by Louis Favier, exhibits statuettes of saints and religious figures.

Several remarkable objects are preserved there, including 13th century funeral slabs. Those of Peter I and Peter II of Saint-Phalle, as well as that of Agnes, Countess of Foins, illustrate medieval funeral art with representations of knights in arms and nobles in prayer. A slab dedicated to Ferry de Cudot, dated from the first half of the 13th century, completes this set. These elements, classified as historical monuments in 1992, reflect the heritage significance of the site.

The building itself was listed as historic monuments in 1976. Its interior also houses a painting on wood, L'Adoration des Mages, dated from the late 15th or early 16th century, classified in 1992. These artistic and historical treasures make the church an emblematic place of Burgundy religious heritage.
