Origin and history

The Dammaria-en-Puisaye tidal barn is a monument located in the commune of Dammaria-en-Puisaye, in the Centre-Val de Loire region. This type of building, typical of rural areas, was historically used to collect and store the tithe, a tax in kind levied by the Church or local lords on the harvests of peasants. In the general context of the Centre-Val de Loire, tithe barns were key elements of the medieval and modern economic and social organization.

They reflected the dependence of rural populations on religious or seigneurial institutions, while playing a central role in managing the community's agricultural resources.
