Origin and history

Le château de Verreux is a house in Arbois, in the Jura department in Burgundy-Franche-Comté. Built shortly before the French Revolution (4th quarter of the 18th century), it initially consists of a main building along a stream and a second perpendicular building. These elements reflect a typical architecture of the time, combining functionality and bourgeois aesthetics.

During the first half of the 19th century, the estate underwent major landscape developments: the park was organized and the stream was integrated into the design of the premises. These transformations illustrate the evolution of tastes for picturesque gardens, characteristic of this period. The castle, with its outbuildings ( stables, kennel, gardener's house) and its park, is listed in the historical monuments inventory in 1997, recognizing its heritage value.

The protected elements include the house body with its east tower, the facades of the adjoining buildings, as well as the courtyard and park in their entirety. These protections underline the importance of preserving both architecture and landscape, as a witness to the lifestyles of local elites in the 18th and 19th centuries. The official address of the monument, 2 rue de Verreux, confirms its anchoring in the urban fabric of Arbois, a city marked by a rich wine and historical heritage.
