Two menhirs aligned (Box E 330): by order of 14 February 1940
Origin and history
The two Menhirs aligned with Carnac are megalithic monuments dated to the Neolithic. Located in the Morbihan department in Brittany, they illustrate the architectural and cultural practices of local prehistoric societies. Their alignment, typical of the Carnac sites, suggests a symbolic or ritual function, although their exact use remains debated by archaeologists.
Classified as a Historical Monument by order of 14 February 1940, these menhirs enjoy legal protection which underlines their heritage importance. Their location, specified as passable (note 5/10), corresponds to the administrative address of Carnac (code Insee 56034), in an area rich in prehistoric remains. Their presence is part of a larger set of megaliths, characteristic of the Carnac landscape.
Neolithic in Brittany was marked by an agro-pastoral society, where menhirs and dolmens probably played a role in territorial organization or collective beliefs. These erected stones, often associated with burials or gathering places, reflect a technical mastery and a world view unique to the communities of the time. Their alignment could also indicate advanced astronomical or geometric knowledge for their time.
