Origin and history

The priory of Dissay-sous-Courcillon, located in the department of Sarthe in Pays de la Loire, finds its origins in the eleventh century, founded by the lords of Courcillon. In the 12th century, it came under the influence of the monks of Beaulieu Abbey in Le Mans, becoming a Benedictine priory integrated into this regional monastic network. The current buildings, redesigned in the 13th, 15th, 18th and 20th centuries, bear witness to these successive architectural changes.

In 1905, following the law of separation of churches and the state, the priory became property of the commune of Dissay-sous-Courcillon. It was then sold in 1928 to an American citizen, marking a turning point in his history. Partially classified as historical monuments since 28 December 1984 (facades and roofs), it retains a major heritage value, reflecting both its religious past and its secular transformations.

Today, the priory embodies a medieval and modern heritage, linked to local history and the political and social changes of France. Its inclusion in the inventory of historical monuments underlines its architectural and cultural importance for the region of Pays de la Loire.
