Origin and history

The Saint-Symphorien resin distillation plant, which has been in operation since 1860, was profoundly modernized and expanded in the early 20th century, around 1920. The work, led by Mr Coulouby, involved the distillery, boiler, storage buildings, as well as a cooperage and pottery. These developments marked the climax of this local industry, specialized in the processing of forest products.

In 1940, the factory was bought by René Poudens, who undertook new modifications, including the removal of cooperage and pottery to adapt the premises to technical developments. Despite these adaptations, activity finally ceased in 1966, sealing the end of an emblematic industrial era. The buildings, registered with the Historical Monuments in 2000, now bear witness to this technical and economic heritage.

Located in Saint-Symphorien en Gironde, the factory reflects the history of the rural industries of New Aquitaine, where the forest and its derivatives played a central role. Its architecture and facilities, although partially modified, offer a rare example of an industrial site dedicated to resin distillation, now protected and owned by the municipality.
