Fortified protohistoric enclosure with several lines of ramparts (Box D 91): inscription by order of 8 March 1982

Origin and history

The fortified protohistoric enclosure of Larceveau-Arros-Cibits is a listed monument located in the municipality of the same name, in the department of the Pyrénées-Atlantiques (64). This site, dated from the Protohistory, bears witness to an ancient occupation and a sophisticated defensive organisation for the time. Remnants retained include several lines of ramparts, suggesting a structure designed to protect a community or strategic location.

The monument was included in the inventory of Historic Monuments by order of 8 March 1982, thus recognizing its heritage and archaeological value. The precise location, although noted as "a priori satisfactory" (level 6/10), places the site near the place called Olhaguiagagne, on the communal territory. No additional information is available on excavations, discovered artifacts or populations that occupied the site.

In Protohistory, fortified fora such as Larceveau-Arros-Cibits generally served as shelters or power centres for local communities. These structures often reflected an organized society, capable of mobilizing resources to build collective defences. In southwestern France, this period is marked by cultural and commercial exchanges, as well as the emergence of more complex social hierarchies.
