Origin and history
The Foix-Lescun district came into being in 1846, when the premises of the Remonte des Chevaux for the Army were built in Tarbes. This installation marked the beginning of the importance of the city as the centre of the light cavalry. The buildings, originally dedicated to the breeding and training of military horses, were transferred in 1857 near the haras and the Larrey district, then taking their current name.
The architecture of the Foix-Lescun district reflects a utilitarian and clean design, typical of 19th century military constructions. The site consists of two guard corps at the entrance, a two-storey central building, and two parallel wings with old stables. The facades, characterized by arching on the ground floor and sober openings, recall the style of the nearby Larrey district, highlighting their primary function: operational efficiency.
In 1994, several elements of the area were protected under the Historic Monuments, including facades, roofs of the entrance pavilions, central building, and stables. This inscription recognizes the heritage value of an architectural ensemble linked to French military history, while preserving a concrete testimony of the logistic organization of the cavalry in the 19th century.
