Origin and history

The castle of Dobert came into being in the 15th century, when a manor house was built in a meander of the Vègre, on the present municipality of Avoise. This first building, of modest size, reflected the typical architecture of the seigneurial residences of the period, often located near the watercourses for defensive and practical reasons. The traces of this medieval period are now partially visible in the structure of the castle.

In the middle of the 18th century, the mansion underwent important transformations to adopt a classical architectural style, characteristic of the aristocratic houses of the time. The expansion work gave it its present appearance, with symmetrical facades and decorative elements inspired by the aesthetic cannons of the Enlightenment century. This metamorphosis reflected the evolution of the tastes and social status of its owners, as well as the influence of architectural models in vogue in France.

The French Revolution marked a troubled period for Dobert Castle, as for many similar buildings. Although the sources do not specify the damage suffered during this period, a restoration was subsequently undertaken, demonstrating the desire to preserve or rehabilitate the building. Two long bodies of dependencies were added, probably to meet new functional needs or to assert a certain prestige.

On December 28, 2019, a fire broke out in one of the castle's outbuildings, completely destroying its roof. Fortunately, the incident did not cause any casualties and the damage was confined to this part of the estate. This event highlighted the vulnerability of historical monuments to contemporary risks, while stressing the importance of their preservation for future generations.

In terms of heritage, the Dobert Castle received official protection on 24 July 1989, when its facades, roofs, moats, as well as certain landscape elements such as the aqueduct and the aisles planted were listed as historical monuments. This recognition highlights the architectural and historical value of the site, as well as the need to maintain its integrity and authenticity.
