Origin and history
The Dolmen de Mané-Bogad is a megalithic building located in the municipality of Ploemel, Morbihan, in the United Kingdom. This neolithic corridor dolmen is distinguished by its circular chamber and remains of its tumulus, although its covering slabs have disappeared. It is about 9 meters long for 6 meters wide and is located in a wood, near the hamlet of Er-Grah, about 1 km west of the centre-bourg of Ploemel.
The monument was studied in the 19th century, as evidenced by a publication by Abbé Collet in 1871 in the Bulletin of the Morbihan Polymathic Society. This ancient text, entitled Tumulus de Mané-Botgade, offers one of the first known descriptions of the site, highlighting its archaeological importance from this time on.
Ranked as historical monuments by decree of 1 June 1931, the dolmen of Mané-Bogad illustrates neolithic funeral architecture in Brittany. Its current state makes it possible to observe megalithic construction techniques, although partially altered by time. 3D photogrammetric reconstitutions are now contributing to a better understanding of its original structure.
The location of the dolmen, specified by GPS coordinates, places the site at the approximate address 24 Poul Hoh, 56400 Ploemel. Its wooded environment and relative distance from the city centre make it a place both preserved and mysterious, typical of Breton megalithic sites. The accuracy of its location is estimated as fair (level 5/10), depending on available sources.
The dolmen is part of a wider network of megalithic sites in Morbihan, a region particularly rich in prehistoric remains. Its classification among French historical monuments and its inclusion in databases such as Monumentum and Mérimée (Insee code: 56161) confirm its protected and studied heritage status.
Finally, the available sources, including Wikipedia and Monumentum, highlight the continued interest in this site, from an archaeological and tourist point of view. Although the practical information on visits is limited, dolmen remains a major witness to the human presence and funeral rites in Neolithic Brittany.
