Dolmen and its tumulus (Case AD 20): entry by order of 2 July 1997
Origin and history
The Andillé dolmen, classified as a Historical Monument, is distinguished by its structure consisting of five orthostats (arrested stones) surmounted by a covering slab measuring about 3.70 meters. This type of construction, typical of Neolithic, generally served as a collective burial. The remains of a tumulus, still visible today, suggest a funeral and symbolic significance for the local communities of the time.
This monument was officially recognized and protected by an inventory listing of Historic Monuments on July 2, 1997. This protection covers both the dolmen and the remains of the tumulus, highlighting their archaeological and heritage value. Located in the commune of Roches-Prémarie-Andillé, in the department of Vienna (New Aquitaine region), it reflects the ancient occupation of this territory and the funeral practices of its inhabitants.
Dolmens, such as Andillé's, were often integrated into ritualized landscapes, serving as territorial markers or memorial sites for Neolithic societies. Their construction reflects advanced technical know-how for the time, especially in the transport and assembly of massive stones. These monuments now offer a valuable insight into the beliefs and social organization of the prehistoric populations of the region.
