Dolmen d'Arlait B (Case A 120): entry by order of 13 June 1975

Origin and history

The Dolmen d'Arlait A de Château-Larcher is a megalithic monument dated to the Neolithic. This type of structure, characteristic of this period, generally served as a collective burial, reflecting funeral practices and beliefs of local prehistoric societies. Although the precise details of its construction and use remain partially unknown, its inclusion in the Historical Monuments underscores its heritage importance.

In the Neolithic era, communities in the current New Aquitaine region were mainly organized around agriculture and livestock. Dolmens, like Arlait A's, played a central role in funeral rituals and collective memory. These monuments, often located in prominent landscapes, also served as territorial landmarks for sedentary populations.

Their construction required Community cooperation, illustrating an already structured social organisation.
