Dolmen d'Arrondo (Box B 152): Order of 21 May 1958
Origin and history
The Dolmen d'Arrondo is a megalithic monument located in Irouléguy, in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques department. It dates from Neolithic and is one of the typical funeral remains of this period. Although little detailed in the sources, it is associated with an eroded circular tumulus, characteristic of the collective burials of the time.
This type of monument was generally used for community funeral rites, reflecting the social organization and beliefs of neolithic populations. Dolmens, like Arrondo's, were often built with stone slabs (orthostats) and covered with a tumulus. Their presence in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques suggests an ancient human occupation and cultural exchanges in this region.
Arrondo's dolmen was classified as historical monuments by order of 21 May 1958. This official protection underscores its heritage and archaeological importance. Close by, another dolmen, Artxuita, located about 600 meters southeast, indicates a concentration of megalithic sites in this area, typical of the prehistoric landscapes of the Pyrenees.
The available data also mention specific architectural elements, such as four sandstone orthostats delimiting the sepulchral chamber. Three other slabs visible in the vicinity could correspond to initial coverage elements, although their current position does not provide certainty of confirmation.
