Origin and history

The Dolmen de Bleigny-le-Carreau is a mysterious stone located in Bleigny-le-Carreau, in the department of Yonne, Burgundy-Franche-Comté. Although unproperly classified as dolmen, this stone is in reality a block of spherical ferruginous sandstone, located on the edge of a road, near an ancient Roman "Arappa" road. Its exact origin and function remain unknown, but its presence suggests a link with the region's ancient infrastructures.

The monument was classified as historical monuments by a ministerial decree dated 3 January 1889. This official protection reflects his heritage interest, although his name "dolmen" is wrong. No additional information is available about its past use or its precise archaeological context, but its location near a Roman way indicates a possible historical or symbolic significance.

The stone, today isolated, is an enigmatic vestige that invites us to ask about the practices and arrangements of ancient times in this part of Burgundy. Its early classification, at the end of the 19th century, reflects the growing interest in preserving the remains, even when their exact nature remains uncertain.

No historical character or specific event is associated with this monument in the available sources. His study could, however, shed light on the relationship between local populations and Roman infrastructure, as well as on the possible uses of this type of stone in a rural or road context.

The commune of Bleigny-le-Carreau, where this monument is located, is located in a department rich in Gallo-Roman and medieval heritage. Although little documented, this stone contributes to the diversity of archaeological traces of the region, often linked to ancient communication axes.
