Dolmen : classification by list of 1889

Origin and history

The Dolmen de Galitorte is a megalithic monument dated to Neolithic, located in the municipality of Buzeins, in the department of Aveyron. This prehistoric site illustrates the funeral and architectural practices of the Neolithic societies of the region, marked by the erection of massive stone structures to house collective burials.

The Dolmen de Galitorte was listed as a historical monument in 1889 and was one of the first French archaeological sites protected by the state. This early recognition underlines its heritage and scientific importance, particularly for the study of megalithic cultures in Occitanie. The list classification of 1889 covers the entire structure, thus preserving its authenticity.

The location of the dolmen, in a rural environment in Aveyron, reflects the strategic choice of Neolithic communities to implant these monuments, often in connection with natural landscapes or roads. Today, the site remains a tangible testimony of that time, accessible to researchers and the public interested in regional prehistory.
