Origin and history
Kergueran Dolmen, located in Belz, Morbihan, is a megalithic monument emblematic of the Neolithic period. Ranked Historic Monument by decree of 24 October 1921, it belongs to the category of gallery dolmens, a funerary architecture typical of this period. Its precise location, 2 Rue du Dolmen, is documented in the Mérimée base under the code Insee 56013, attached to the municipality of Belz in the district of Vannes.
Dolmen, like Kergueran's, were collective funeral structures used by neolithic communities to bury their dead. Their construction reflects a complex social organization and spiritual beliefs related to the worship of ancestors. In the Breton region, these monuments show an ancient human occupation and remarkable mastery of massive stone construction techniques. Their presence in the local landscape underscores the importance of memory and ritual practices for the people of the time.
The classification of the Kergueran dolmen in 1921 illustrates the early recognition of its heritage value by the French authorities. This status of Historic Monument aims to protect and preserve this archaeological vestige, while allowing its study to better understand the lifestyles and traditions of neolithic societies in Brittany. Today, there remains a tangible testimony of this pivotal period of European prehistory.
