Origin and history

The dolmen de la Cigalière, also known as the dolmen de Belsabé, is an emblematic megalithic building located in the commune of Cesseras, in the department of Hérault. This monument, dated from Neolithic, is distinguished by its dolmen type structure with wide corridor, measuring 8.70 meters in length. It is covered with an imposing cover table, now very inclined, which bears witness to its seniority and the transformations that have taken place over the millennia. During archaeological excavations, an amber pearl was discovered, offering a rare glimpse of funeral or ritual practices of that time.

Ranked as historical monuments by an order of 10 December 1981, the dolmen de la Cigalière enjoys official protection which underlines its heritage importance. This classification guarantees its preservation and highlights its role in the study of neolithic societies in the region. The monument is now owned by the municipality of Cesseras, which facilitates its management and accessibility for researchers and visitors. Its location, reported as 5218 Balsabe in GPS coordinates, remains a reference point for megalith enthusiasts in Occitanie.

Dolmen is part of a larger set of megalithic sites in the Herault, an area rich in prehistoric remains. These monuments, often linked to funeral or symbolic practices, reflect the social and spiritual organization of neolithic communities. Their study provides a better understanding of the construction techniques, beliefs and lifestyles of these ancient populations. The Dolmen de la Cigalière, with its architectural features and history, is thus a valuable testimony of this pivotal period of prehistory.
