Origin and history

The dolmen d'er Houel (or er Hourel) is a megalithic building located in Locmariaquer, Morbihan, Brittany. This dolmen, dated from the Neolithic, is located at the end of the pointe d'er Houel, near the beach Saint-Pierre, under a pine forest. It is almost completely ruined: only three orthostats in the room and one covering slab remain, suggesting a dolmen-type structure with a corridor.

The floor of the chamber is paved with large stones, characteristic of the megalithic constructions of this period. The monument was inscribed under the title of the Historic Monuments by order of 24 July 2023, protecting the dolmen and its right of way within a radius of 6 meters. It appears in the cadastre of Locmariaquer, section BM, plot No. 85.

The site is located about 2 km southwest of the centre of Locmariaquer and 1 km west of the Stone Plates, another notable megalithic complex. Although little documented, this dolmen is part of the rich megalithic heritage of Morbihan, a region with many comparable sites. Its current state does not allow the exact reconstruction of its original appearance, but techniques such as photogrammetry have been used to propose a 3D model.

Available sources, including Wikipedia and Monumentum, confirm its recent listing as a historical monument. Dolmen is mentioned in ancient inventories, such as that of Zacharie Le Rouzic in 1965, which lists megalithic monuments in the Carnac region. Its coastal location and its state of conservation make it a fragile but precious testimony of neolithic funeral practices in Brittany.
