Origin and history
The dolmen of Marjallat, also named dolmen of Morgeac or Josat, is a megalithic vestige located in the commune of Mazeyrat-d'Allier, in the Haute-Loire department. This monument, dated from the Neolithic, is now largely destroyed. By 1813 it was reported as damaged, and in 1853 it was even considered extirpated. Originally, it was probably a simple dolmen, composed of four slabs of which only two remain today.
Ranked as historical monuments by order of 11 August 1986, the dolmen de Marjallat illustrates the importance of megalithic sites in the region. Its state of advanced degradation reflects the challenges of preserving prehistoric remains, often exposed to weather and human activities. Historical records, such as those of the Revue archéologique du centre de la France (1977), highlight its inclusion in regional inventories of megalithic monuments.
The site is referenced in the Mérimée base under the code INSEE 43132, attached to the municipality of Mazeyrat-d'Allier in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. Although its access and precise location are poorly documented (estimated precision at 6/10), its classification as a historical monument makes it a protected part of the local heritage. No information is available on its openness to the public or related services.
