The dolmen of Saint-Pierre Lopérec and the remains of its tumulus, appearing in the cadastre of the commune section BL parcel No 125, represented on the plan attached to the decree: inscription by order of 24 July 2023
Origin and history
The Dolmen de Saint-Pierre-Lopérec is a megalithic monument located in a meadow northwest of the hamlet of Saint-Pierre-Lopérec, on the town of Locmariaquer (Morbihan). It is in the immediate vicinity of the coast, less than 100 metres from the Saint-Philibert River. Only the funeral chamber remains today: of quadrangular shape (3 m long and 2.1 m wide), it is covered by two tables resting on nine orthostats. The south access corridor has disappeared, leaving room for a partially preserved site.
Dolmen dates from Neolithic, with an estimated first occupation between 5,800 and 6,300 B.C.E., followed by a reoccupation between 4,800 and 4,200 years. These dates are an ancient testimony of the funeral practices of the time. The monument, along with the remains of its tumulus, was listed as historical monuments on 24 July 2023. Since 2025, it has included the property "Sites des megaliths de Carnac et des banks du Morbihan", a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The site is part of a larger megalithic complex, characteristic of the Breton region. Locmariaquer, close to the Carnac alignments, is home to other major prehistoric remains, highlighting the cultural and ritual importance of this territory during the Neolithic period. The recent protection of the dolmen reflects a desire to preserve this fragile heritage, threatened by coastal erosion and human activities. The orthostats and cover tables, although partially preserved, offer an overview of megalithic construction techniques.
Administratively, the dolmen is located on cadastral plot BL No.125 of Locmariaquer (code Insee 56116). Its approximate address, 22 Place Dit Keranlay, allows it to be located in a rural and coastal environment. The available sources (Wikipedia, Monumentum) confirm its status as a historical monument and its integration into the tourist circuits dedicated to Breton megalithism.
