Dolmen de Seigmas (Case C 270): ranking by list of 1889

Origin and history

The Dolmen de Seigmas, also known as the Dolmen de Seignas or Brillaud, is a megalithic building located in La Lauzette, in the commune of Mas-d'Azil, in the department of Ariège. This funerary monument, typical of Neolithic, bears witness to the collective burial practices of that time. It is one of many megalithic sites scattered throughout the region, reflecting the cultural and spiritual importance of these constructions to local prehistoric communities.

Ranked as historical monuments in 1889, the dolmen de Seigmas illustrates the early interest in preserving the megalithic heritage in France. This classification, which took place in the context of the first protection lists, underlines its archaeological and historical value. The site, although little documented in available sources, remains a significant example of the Neolithic necropolises of Ariège, a region rich in remains of this period.

Dolmens, such as that of Seigmas, were generally used as collective burials and could also mark the territory or symbolize the connection between the living and the ancestors. Their construction, often collective, involved a structured social organization and advanced technical knowledge for the time. In the context of Neolithic in Occitania, these monuments are part of a landscape marked by the nascent agriculture, sedentarization and development of elaborate funeral rites.
