Origin and history
The Dolmen de Séneujols, also called Palet de Gargantua or Le Vilar, is a megalithic building typical of Neolithic. Located in the commune of Séneujols, in the Haute-Loire department, it consists of two orthostats, a bedside slab and a blanket table. The funeral chamber, 2.50 m long by 1.20 m wide at a height of 1.25 m, was searched clandestinely before 1972, without delivering archaeological material during the sifting of the debris that year.
Ranked as historical monuments by order of 11 August 1986, this dolmen bears witness to the collective funeral practices of the time. Its sober architecture, characteristic of simple dolmens, reflects a construction intended to house remains, although its content disappeared before any in-depth scientific study.
According to a local legend, this dolmen would be a palet launched by the giant Gargantua, mythical figure of French folklore, and remained on the ground. This fantastic interpretation, common to megaliths, highlights the popular imagination associated with these enigmatic monuments, often perceived as remains of an era when supernatural forces shaped the landscape.
