Origin and history
The Dolmen de la Croix Audran is a megalithic building emblematic of the Neolithic period, located in the municipality of Carnac, Morbihan. This monument, composed of a funeral chamber covered with a tumulus, illustrates the architectural and ritual practices of the prehistoric societies of the region. Its designation as Historic Monuments by order of 24 July 2023 attests to its heritage value, protecting both the structure itself and its immediate environment, including the soil of cadastal plot BH 108.
Dolmens, like that of the Audran Cross, served mainly as collective burials during the Neolithic period, reflecting a complex social organization and a spirituality centered on the cult of ancestors. At Carnac, this period is marked by a dense concentration of megaliths, reflecting intense human occupation and advanced mastery of stone construction techniques. These monuments also played a role in the landscape, marking territories or places of memory for local communities.
The location of the dolmen, at the approximate address of the 8 Impasse Croix Audran, is documented in the Mérimée database under the code Insee 56034, attached to the department of Morbihan and to the Brittany region. Although GPS coordinates suggest average accuracy (level 5 on a scale of 10), its identification remains clear thanks to cadastral references and its integration into the rich megalithic carnatian heritage. The absence of any mention of its current accessibility or tourist vocation suggests that the preservation of scientific and heritage resources is a priority.
