Origin and history
The Dolmen des Pennes is a megalithic monument located in the commune of Vastres in the Haute-Loire department. Data from Neolithic, it is a small simple dolmen, built by reusing a natural outcrop of granite. The cover table, measuring 1.80 m by 1.60 m, is partially on this outcrop, while the north side of the bedroom is closed by a rectangular slab. The funeral chamber, 1.5 m by 1.60 m, was emptied at an indefinite time, and the site was then used as a shelter for shepherds.
The dolmen was classified as a historical monument by decree of 4 January 1968, thus recognizing its heritage importance. Its structure, though modest, illustrates the funeral and architectural practices of Neolithic in this region. The studies conducted in 1965 by M. de Bayle des Hermens and R. de Bayle des Hermens helped document this site among the megalithic monuments of the Haute-Loire.
The location of the dolmen, near the Vastres, makes it a rare testimony of the ancient human occupations in this area. Although its funeral content has disappeared, its architecture and subsequent reuse offer valuable insights into the lifestyles and cultural practices of the Neolithic populations of the region. The site is now protected and part of the French historical heritage.
