Origin and history
The Dolmen des Rossignols is a megalithic monument discovered in 1903 in Saint-Brevin-les-Pins, in the Loire-Atlantique department. It was discovered by chance during a plough by the landowner, Mr Lesueur. This dolmen, typical of the Neolithic period, is distinguished by its access corridor oriented to the southeast and its circular sepulchral chamber of 4 meters in diameter, covered originally by a single large cover table.
When it was discovered, the room was partially searched, revealing two large flint blades. The cover table, measuring 4 metres long by 3 metres wide, bears traces of attempts to drain by carriers, indicating potential reuse of the material. The dolmen was listed as historic monuments on December 21, 1982, recognizing its heritage importance.
Today, the Dolmen des Rossignols is located at the approximate address of the 13 Allée des Rossignols, on land belonging to the commune. Although partially covered by a dune, there remains a remarkable testimony of the funeral and architectural practices of Neolithic in the region of Pays de la Loire. Its state of conservation, including the presence of all its orthostats, makes it a valuable archaeological site for the study of local megalithism.
