Origin and history
The Dolmen du Calvaire is a megalithic building located in Saint-Alban-Auriolles, in the department of Ardèche, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. The Neolithic monument reflects the funeral and cultural practices of the prehistoric populations of the region. It was inventoried and first described by Jules de Malbos, a 19th-century geologist and speleologist.
The dolmen derives its name from a cross road established in the eighteenth century, composed of 14 stations from the village and leading to the chapel Saint-Pierre-ès-liens, located nearby. This ordeal was erected in 1722, following an epidemic of plague in 1721, to commemorate this tragic event during the procession of the twigs.
Ranked as historical monuments in 1889, the Dolmen du Calvaire is a remarkable example of the megalithic heritage ardècheis. Its state of conservation and its historical context make it a site of interest both archaeological and cultural, linked to local traditions and religious practices after its construction.
Available sources, including Wikipedia and Monumentum, confirm its importance in the landscape of the megalithic sites of the Ardèche. The monument is located precisely at the approximate address of 170 Impasse des Campanes, and its official classification relates to the dolmen itself, identified under the cadastral reference A 375p.
