Dolmen (Case B 304): Order of 29 July 1937
Origin and history
The Dolmen de Val-des-Marais is a megalithic monument located in the commune of Val-des-Marais, in the department of Marne (51), in the Champagne-Ardenne region (now Grand Est). Dating from recent Neolithic and Chalcolithic times, he testified to the funerary and architectural practices of prehistoric societies of that time. This type of structure, composed of large, erect and covered stones, generally served as a collective burial, reflecting a complex social organization and beliefs related to death and beyond.
Ranked Historic Monument by order of 29 July 1937, this dolmen is officially protected because of its archaeological and heritage importance. The precise location of the site is indicated as approximate, with a map accuracy considered "passable" (note 5/10). Although available sources (including Monumentum) do not provide any additional details on its specific use or local history, its ranking attests to its value for understanding megalithic cultures in France.
The dolmens of this period were often integrated into symbolic landscapes, marking the territory and serving as landmarks for the surrounding communities.
