Origin and history
The dolmen Pierre There, also called Pierre-à-la-Marte, is a megalithic monument dated from the Neolithic, located near the village of Saint-Plantaire, in the department of Indre. This site bears witness to an ancient occupation of the region, marked by the presence of several dolmens and tumulus, including Pierre Folle, Pierre Chaput and the Dolmen de Saint-Jallet. These remains illustrate the funeral and cultural practices of local prehistoric societies.
The commune of Saint-Plantaire, classified as a rural area, is home to a remarkable natural and historical heritage. The dolmen Pierre It was classified as historical monuments in 1862, highlighting its archaeological importance. This type of monument, typical of Neolithic, generally served as a collective burial and reflects the social and spiritual organization of the communities of the time.
The surrounding territory, crossed by the Creuse and marked by landscapes of meadows and forests, has also promoted the development of places of worship and gathering, such as the Iron Chapel, once important for pilgrimages and fairs. The construction of the Eguzon Dam in the 20th century transformed the region into a tourist hub, attracting visitors for its landscapes and historical heritage.
Today, the dolmen Pierre Here remains a symbol of the rich prehistoric past of Saint-Plantaire, integrated in a natural environment preserved and valued by distinctions such as the label "Cities and Villages Fleuris".
