Dolmen and polisher (Case D 871): entry by order of 29 November 1951

Origin and history

The Dolmen and Polishing House of Sorel-Moussel is an emblematic monument of the Neolithic period, located in the municipality of Sorel-Moussel, in Eure-et-Loir. This site, composed of a dolmen and a polisher, illustrates the funerary practices and polishing techniques of the stone tools characteristic of this era. These remains provide an overview of the know-how and beliefs of prehistoric communities in the region.

The monument was recognized for its historical and archaeological importance, which led to its inscription as a Historical Monument by decree of 29 November 1951. This protection aims to preserve this rare testimony of the past, while allowing its study and valorisation. Although the practical information on its location is considered poor (level 5 out of 10), its approximate address is identified as the 12 B Route du Gué des Grues in Sorel-Moussel.

The dolmen, a collective funeral structure, and the polisher, used to sharpen and shape stone tools, reflect an advanced social and technical organization for the time. These monuments were often places for gathering and transmitting knowledge, playing a central role in the life of neolithic communities. Their presence in the Centre-Val de Loire underlines the importance of this region in the settlement and human activities during prehistory.
