The dolmens and the ciste of the point of Nioul and their tumulus, appearing in the cadastre of the commune section E parcels Nos. 277 and 278, represented on the plan attached to the decree: inscription by order of 24 July 2023

Origin and history

The dolmens of the tip of Nioul, located on Île-aux-Moines in Brittany, date from Neolithic. These megalithic structures, typical of this period, bear witness to the funeral and ritual practices of local prehistoric societies. Their presence on this island of the Gulf of Morbihan underlines the strategic and symbolic importance of the site from prehistoric times.

The site was officially recognized and protected by a registration order under the Historic Monuments on 24 July 2023. This order covers the dolmens, a cist and their tumulus, located on cadastral plots E277 and E278. The accuracy of their geographical location is estimated to be poor (note 5/10), but their archaeological value remains indisputable.

In the Neolithic era, the Breton communities erected dolmens as places of collective burial, reflecting a complex social organization and spirituality linked to the cult of ancestors. These monuments, often associated with remarkable landscapes, also served as territorial landmarks. Their construction required collective cooperation, illustrating the structure of the societies of the time.

Today, the dolmens of the tip of Nioul are a major archaeological heritage of the region, managed under the responsibility of the municipality of Ile-aux-Moines (code Insee 56087), in the department of Morbihan. Their preservation allows us to study the construction techniques and beliefs of neolithic populations in Brittany.
