Origin and history

The Dolmen de Finelle-Haut is a dolmen-style megalithic building in the commune of Septfonds, Tarn-et-Garonne (Occitanie). Ranked as historical monuments in 1889, it stands out as the only protected dolmen among the fifteen recorded in the commune. This funeral monument, typical of Neolithic, bears witness to the ritual and architectural practices of that time.

In 1972, water supply works partially damaged the slab of the dolmen, resulting in search and rescue. This research allowed the discovery of archaeological furniture, including a flint dagger, revealing the historic significance of the site. The dolmen is located 800 metres west of the town of Septfonds, near the road to Finelle, in an environment rich in megalithic remains.

Sevenfonds, close to sites like Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val, concentrate many dolmens, illustrating a dense human occupation in Neolithic. The dolmen of Finelle-Haut, with its early ranking, embodies an exceptional heritage for the understanding of local prehistoric societies. Its location, in Redon wood, and its proximity to Peyrelade dolmen reinforce its archaeological interest.
