Origin and history

The Beaubassin estate is a large estate located in the Saint-François district of Saint-Denis, on Réunion Island. It is distinguished by its house built in 1863 and its French garden, which still houses Bourbon roses, azaleas, camellias and an original basin. This place was once the second acclimation garden of Reunion, showing its historical importance in the introduction and adaptation of plants on the island.

The estate belonged to Alfred Mazarieux, a figure associated with its development. For several generations, it has been owned by the Ozoux family, which ensures its preservation. The site was officially recognized for its heritage value in 2018, when it was added to the additional inventory of Historic Monuments. Its exact address, 71 Alfred Mazérieux Road, and its landscape make it an emblematic place of Saint-Denis.

The Beaubassin estate is fully protected, with the exception of two bungalows and a house located on the outskirts. This protection also includes the soil of cadastral plot No.360, stressing the importance of preserving both the buildings and the natural environment of the site. Today, there remains a living testimony to the agricultural and botanical history of La Réunion, while being part of the local architectural heritage.
