Origin and history
The Boissets estate is a historical monument located in the commune of Gorges-du-Tarn-Causses, in Lozère (Occitanie region). This site, registered by ministerial decree on 9 April 2025, includes all buildings (except a recent hangar), as well as the floors and basements of 18 cadastral plots. The protected perimeter also includes portions of uncadastral roads, delimited precisely on a plan annexed to the registration order. The domain now belongs to the department of Lozère, which suggests public management of this heritage.
The location of the domain, at Boissets, is indicated with satisfactory accuracy, thanks to a postal address and GPS coordinates. The official address registered in the Mérimée base is 212 Route de l'Estive, 48210 Gorges-du-Tarn-Causses, confirming its anchoring in a territory marked by the landscapes of the Gorges du Tarn and the Causses. No information is available on its current use (visits, accommodation, etc.), nor on its history before 2025.
The status of Monument Historique gives the Boissets domain legal protection, guaranteeing the preservation of its architecture and its environment. This recent inscription (2025) reflects a desire to preserve a rural or natural heritage emblematic of the Lozère, a department known for its geological sites and pastoral heritage. The protected elements, including roads and plots, suggest a landscape and agricultural dimension, typical of the Lozerian causations.
In the absence of details of its origin or former owners, the estate is part of a regional context where large rural areas often played an economic role (breeding, agriculture) and social (housing, community gathering). The Lozère, a medium-mountain territory, has long lived through these activities, with scattered habitats adapted to the constraints of the relief. The protection of the Boissets estate could thus visit to perpetuate this model of land use, characteristic of the Causses.
